WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates benefits everyone! It’s an innovative and safe system of mind-body exercise which we believe is the best workout available to anyone, at any age. Whether it be for injury rehab, a body that needs toning, pre and post pregnancy, overall improvement in wellness, enhancing athletic performance, or maintaining strength and stability as we age, Pilates does it all.

Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in Europe in the early 20th century, it was initially designed to rehabilitate injured soldiers. The first Pilates studio was opened in New York in 1926 and has grown ever since in popularity and stature, initially through the dance and performance fraternity who were quick to realise its benefits.

Today, Pilates is a globally recognised phenomenon with loyal followers and advocates in all corners of the world.

The benefits of Pilates are numerous; enhanced physical strength, flexibility, agility, balance, endurance, control, coordination, mobility, range of motion, improved posture and alignment, as well as stress relief, improved mental focus and an improved sense of well being (who doesn’t want some that!). In just a short space of time Pilates transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs.

Pilates classes are a full body workout, with particular focus given to developing a strong core, lengthening and aligning the body (rather than bulking and shortening muscles), while utilising the breath efficiently. Pilates is low impact resistance training, keeping your joints free of strain and pain, developing what you need with a very low chance of injury. Pilates will leave you with increased energy levels, a clear, focused mindset and a body that feels strong and in control having been through a challenging workout.

The Pilates system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. Not only that but with hundreds of exercise variations you’ll never be bored. For every move you think you’ve mastered, Pilates has another version that’s a little different and a little harder.

No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you, but don’t just take our word for it, read our testimonials or speak with our clients. Pilates doesn’t just change bodies, it changes lives. Pilates will give you a healthier, happier and more satisfying life. Discover how good your body is designed to feel.

THE PRINCIPALS OF PILATES

Pilates Breathing

BREATH

Controlling your breath with deep exhalations as you perform each exercise helps activate your muscles and keep you focused.

Pilates Centering

CENTERING

By paying attention to the muscles of the core (the Pilates Powerhouse), you will help all of your bodies’ muscles function and develop more efficiently.

Pilates Precision

PRECISION

Practice makes perfect. Proper form is essential to ensure you gain the most benefit and keep your body healthy.

Pilates Concentration

CONCENTRATION

By focusing on your mind-body awareness, the better connection you establish with your body, and the more benefits you gain from your workouts. It’s better to do each exercise slowly and precisely, than with incorrect form or posture from each movement.

Pilates Flow

FLOW

Each Pilates motion should be smooth and graceful. Try to create the grace of a dancer or a gymnast in your practice.

Pilates Control

CONTROL

In Pilates, slow and steady wins the race. Control, rather than intensity or repetition, is key to performing the exercises correctly. All movements should be performed with precision, to gain the maximum benefits.
